Crout’s Way
Crout’s way can be accessed at Drogheda just west of South River in Conception Bay, Hopeall in Trinity Bay and at a number of places in between. To hike the entire trail will take about two days and it is definitely intended for the experienced hiker.
Cupids
During 2009 the archaeological site at Cupids will be open to visitors seven days a week from June 8 until October 9. Visiting hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. from Monday to Friday and 10:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. A tour of the site will take about 30 minutes, so give yourself lots of time and plan to be at the site by at least 4:15 p.m.
In addition to the dig site, visitors can tour the Archaeology Lab where the artifacts recovered from the site are taken to be cleaned, catalogued and conserved and the Cupids Museum where a number of artifacts recovered from the site are on display along with many other interesting items from Cupids' past.
Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for children. School and other group tours can be arranged by phoning 709-528-1344 or 709-528-3500.
Dildo Island/Anderson’s Cove
Interpretative panels describing the archaeological work conducted at both Dildo Island and Anderson’s Cove as well as artifacts recovered from these two sites are on display at the Dildo and Area Interpretation Centre located on the Main Road in Dildo. Anderson’s Cove is about a 2 km walk from the Interpretation Centre. In 2009, the Centre opens full time on June 15. It will be open from 9:00 to 5:00 from Monday to Saturday and from 1:00 to 5:00 on Sundays.
New Perlican
Some of the artifacts recovered from excavations at the Hefford Plantation are now on display at the Fred Grant Memorial Building in New Perlican. The building is open to visitors from 9:00am to 4pm Monday to Friday. The site is located just behind the building.
Hikers should also check out the D’Iberville Coastal Hiking Trail which retraces the route followed by D’Iberville from the Sugarloaf in Winterton, through New Perlican and on to Heart’s Content during his attack on the English Shore in the winter of 1697. In New Perlican the trail can be accessed at either Garlop Point or Jean’s Head.
Russell’s Point
People can visit the site at Russell's Point and view the history boards at any time. A small building with display panels is located on the site. Opening times for the 2009 season will be posted soon.
Winterton
William Lincefild’s headstone is currently on display at the Winterton Boat Building and Community Museum. The museum also includes many artifacts from Winterton’s past and an excellent exhibit on the history of boat building in the community. Pinhorn’s Room is located between the museum and the beach.
