Henry Crout's Journal

Entries to Date

April 10, 1613

In the morning the wind at west, little wind. The sun rising verie pleasant [and] thawing the snow verie fast.

This day, about 12 of the clock, our governor, Master Guy, departed for England in the Hope, Master Bowling [being her] master under god, bound for Bristol.

This night proved verie myld weather [with] some small rain.

[John Guy sailed back to Bristol aboard the Hope and, as far as we know, never returned to Newfoundland. The Hope also carried a number of letters back to England from the colonists at Cupids including letters to Sir Percival Willoughby from Henry Crout and Bartholomew Pearson. You can read a transcription of Crout's letter by clicking Here. Click Here to read a transcription of Pearson's letter.]
