Henry Crout's Journal

Entries to Date

January 2, 1613

In the morning the winde at south weste. Little winde with varie faire sun shining all the day and so pleasant and warm as though it had bin at midsummer. The air a little cold in the morning.

About one of the clock, after dinner, Master Whittington and the rest of his company came from coasting from Green Bay [Bay de Verde] of whom we had great doubt, being [that] they had bin wanting 20 days. [We] thought they had bin starved with the cold and want of food. They killed in ther voyage, at Green Bay and other places, 3 foxes, 2 dozen of ducks and some dozen of partridges. In Green Bay they [did] see them in great companies.

They could not bring our canoe but left her in the woodes between Green Bay and New Perlican. And at Harbour de Grace they lost ther boate but got another coming in there upon Christmas Even.

This night verie mylde but after midnight it did blow much winde with many hail showers before day.
